Cosplay Is Not Consent

Cosplay Is Not Consent: Guidelines to ensure Copenhagen Gaming Week is a safe place for everyone - including those in cosplay.

At Copenhagen Gaming Week we want to celebrate the exciting world of cosplay! It is a beloved hobby that allows fans to embody their favorite video game characters. Cosplayers bring an amazing visual element and atmosphere, and if you ask them nicely, they will most likely be happy to help you snap an amazing photo of their costumes.

However, it is crucial to remember that cosplay is not consent. Just because someone may look like a fictional character, does not mean you can treat them as such. Cosplayers are humans, so please treat them like any other person – with respect.

To create a safe and enjoyable environment for all attendees at Copenhagen Gaming Week, we have established a set of guidelines for everyone to follow.

1. Respect personal boundaries:

When interacting with cosplayers, always respect their personal space and boundaries. Remember that their costumes are not an invitation for physical contact or intrusive behavior. Avoid touching a cosplayer or their props without their permission.

2. Obtain consent for photography:

Cosplayers invest considerable time and effort into their costumes, and many are more than happy to have their pictures taken – also featuring you. But always ask for permission before photographing or recording a cosplayer, if they are not in a setting where they know it is allowed – such as on a stage or in a parade. Respect their decision if they decline or request specific conditions, such as posing in a certain way etc.

3. Use appropriate language and behavior:

Maintain a respectful and inclusive atmosphere by using appropriate language and refraining from offensive or derogatory comments. Treat cosplayers and fellow attendees with kindness, understanding, and appreciation for their passion and creativity. Remember, we are all here to celebrate our love for gaming.

4. Report harassment or inappropriate behavior:

If you witness or experience any form of harassment, inappropriate behavior, or violation of boundaries, please report it immediately to event staff or security personnel. It is our priority to ensure a safe environment for all attendees, and we rely on your help to address any concerns promptly and effectively.

5. Be mindful of venue rules:

In addition to the guidelines specific to cosplay, please adhere to the venue's rules and regulations. These may include restrictions on props, costumes, or behavior in certain areas. Respect these rules to help make Copenhagen Gaming Week a pleasant experience for everyone.
